SSS TTT OOO PPP! SSS TTT OOO PPP! SSS TTT OOO PPP!
DON'T BUY ANOTHER VPS UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS!
We at BigVPS, a brand of colo4jax, an established dedicated hosting provider since 2005, are becoming increasingly troubled by what we see going on around us. There are too many faces in the VPS market and many of them probably don't belong. As many of you are aware, there is an *extremely low* barrier to entry into the VPS market. Anyone who can buy a dedicated server can run a VPS host. This scares us to no end.
Although we don't consider such an operation to be a viable threat to our business, we're very concerned for our customers. There are many fly-by-night VPS operations out there who aren't qualified to be in business. Ultimately we foresee see numerous shakeups and shakedowns in the VPS market due to this instability. This is bad for our customers and bad for business.
Therefore we propose a minimum checklist of criteria that any VPS host should be able to meet. In order to keep things simple, we'd like to enumerate these, as they apply to our company:
* Our VPS hardware is maintained by local techs from our company who have IMMEDIATE, HANDS-ON ACCESS to our host nodes - this means that any issue, no matter how big or small, is dealt with by our own staff. Unlike other VPS hosts who colocate their hardware thousands of miles away, BigVPS is an offshoot of a colocation provider (colo4jax, LLC), thus we have local access all day every day. Other companies who colocate their gear are typically far away and pay top rates for remote hands (upwards of $150 per hour!). Doesn't it stand to reason that this cost is passed directly to the customer?
Are you positive that your VPS host has their own local techs? If they have multiple geographic locations, chances are they do not. Are you even sure they're not using another company's dedicated servers? If they are, you're taking a big risk.
Because we also provide dedicated servers, we have a HUGE stock of hardware - this gives us maximum buying power and prevents downtime because we always have spare parts available. One question that people love to ask is, "are your offers sustainable? will you crash and burn like many other VPS hosts?" Of course they're sustainable. We believe the manner in which we provision servers is the most efficient method in existence regarding cost control. We don't waste anything, and the savings we incur is passed directly to our customers - this is our institutional philosophy regarding stewardship. Believe it or not, our pricing still yields a substantial profit - we wouldn't be in business if it didn't.
We only sell Xen, the most robust VPS software available - If you're insisting on Virtuozzo or OpenVZ for a *NIX VPS (i.e. burstable RAM), you're most certainly cheating yourself. Xen requires dedicated memory resources so we *can not* oversubscribe our host nodes. Xen also behaves the most like a dedicated server, allowing you to compile your own kernel and to have full control over your environment. Unlike Virtuozzo and OpenVZ providers, our resources are *dedicated* to our customers. You'll never encounter host swapping or any of the classic deficiencies of those other platforms - insist on Xen!
We operate our own network infrastructure - our parent company (colo4jax) is a member of a unique club of only 20,000 ISPs worldwide who operate an Autonomous System of networks connected and advertised to the global Internet. This gives us the same standing as large global backbones like Level 3, Global Crossing, AT&T, Savvis, MCI/UUNet/Verizon, Qwest, etc. Because of our unique position, we do not have to depend on any other single entity for Internet connectivity.
Insist that your provider operate their own ASN; it proves a certain level of competence and a commitment to customers. It's really not that difficult, yet very few providers in the VPS realm do it.
If you're considering a host who can not boast of the same criteria, you should probably switch to BigVPS. Our untarnished reputation of golden customer service and uninterrupted uptime speaks for itself. You won't find threads about outages, poor performance, or poor customer experiences with us - in fact you won't find anything negative at all. We are proof that a good name is better than gold.
Our hosts run Xen 3 with proprietary performance enhancements and resource consumption safeguards to keep every customer operating on an even keel. Host nodes are multi-core Xeons with RAID5 and 100mbit or gigabit uplinks into our network. Here are our current specials on virtual private servers with NO SETUP FEES:
256MB RAM 20GB storage 250GB in + 250GB out OR 2mbit unmetered Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora or CentOS $13 per month, 3 month prepayment required
512MB RAM 50GB storage 500GB in + 500GB out OR 4mbit unmetered Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora or CentOS $23 per month, 3 month prepayment required
DirectAdmin control panel 512MB RAM 50GB storage 500GB in + 500GB out OR 4mbit unmetered Fedora or CentOS $29 per month, 3 month prepayment required
New cPanel version 11! 512MB RAM 50GB storage 500GB in + 500GB out OR 4mbit unmetered Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora or CentOS $32 per month, 3 month prepayment required
A common question that we get asked a lot is whether we can waive the prepayment requirement. The answer is no. The reason we levy a prepayment requirement is multifaceted; it keeps cash flow positive and it promotes a good relationship with our customers as they demonstrate with their wallet that they don't intend to use our service for abusive purposes. Our 3 month prepayment requirement covers your first 3 months of service with colo4jax, then billing reverts to month-to-month.
Most services are online within 24 to 48 hours. We offer free OS reloads and free reboots via email/ticketing 24 hours a day. If you're ready to order or if you have questions, please feel free to contact me via email at rrb {at} bigvps.com
